We used to see ourselves as agents of change.  Because when a church is dying, when the numbers diminish, all the heads turn silver, and no fingerprints dirty the pristine walls you can almost see her pallbearers standing at the door.  And when she is dying you know — change is necessary.

But like so much of this upside-down, first-will-be-last kingdom, we got it out of order.  We saw ourselves as agents of change, when we really should have been agents of love.  Because isn’t that who God is?  I’m sure I read that somewhere.

Our youthful eyes didn’t have the wisdom to see that the failure to change was first a failure to love.  Failure to love one another, to love God more than tradition, to love those outside.   Because churches never fail because of a lack of change unless they have first failed in love.

I hope I have learned this lesson well.

In the true spirit of Five Minute Friday, this post was written during my lunch break, again. Our challenge is to write for 5 minutes flat on the prompt: “Change” with no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.

Hmmm, sounds like a familiar chorus of a song being played in my world. WOW. Thank you thank you Eyvonne for the reminder that yes, its about the relationships and the love. I hate the tired old phrase can’t we all just get along….but I am thinking just that…can’t we…. at least love each other??? Your words are moving me so beautifully today. I don’t know what you eat for lunch on Friday’s but it sure fuels your writing and my soul.

Well, it may be cheating but I usually look at the topic and mull it over in the morning before I sit down to write.

And, I’m not a Pollyanna, can’t we all just get along person either. But unless our actions, words, and ideas are fueled by love for God first and then one another, our change will not be right. This is one I’ve learned the hard way… am still learning….

Well written – love the focus on love instead of change…
